Finished versus Unfinished Murphy Beds

Finished versus Unfinished Murphy Beds

Considering purchasing a Lori bed? There are two types of beds to choose from - Finished and Unfinished. A finished Murphy bed means the wood has already been sanded and stained, making it smooth to the touch and durable to withstand a high amount of use. An unfinished Murphy bed comes completely natural, so the bed will need to be sanded and painted by you.

Below we explain the pros and cons of finished versus unfinished Murphy beds and how to know which option is best for you.

Benefits of an Unfinished Murphy Bed

An unfinished Murphy bed means you get to put your own creative spin on it. For example, if you have a specific color of home decor that you want to match your Murphy bed with and that color isn’t provided by us, choosing an unfinished bed allows you to paint it whichever color you prefer.

Challenges of an Unfinished Murphy Bed

Choosing an unfinished Murphy bed? You’ll need to set aside between 4 to 8 hours of time to sand and paint your Lori Bed. That could be your entire Saturday. Note: Our unfinished beds cannot be stained, they must be painted. Sanding and painting can be challenging for first-timers, so it’s best to choose this option if you have prior experience.

Additionally, there is no edge banding on the Unfinished beds - Which means the edges are extremely rough and will need extra sanding to make them nice and smooth before you apply any paint. You might be thinking you can just skip this part and leave the edges of your bed as is, but this would be a mistake. Again, wood without edge banding tends to be coarse and can significantly take away from the overall appearance of your Murphy bed.

Benefits of a Finished Murphy Bed

A finished Murphy bed is exactly that - completely finished! Our team at Lori Beds does all the work for you, ensuring you receive a professionally finished bed that will withstand use for years to come. In addition to expertly sanding and staining your bed, we also apply edge banding around the bed. This special banding protects the edges of the bed while it’s rolled up and down reducing the effects of wear-and-tear, while also providing it with a uniform, clean appearance. Additionally, our finishes are UV cured, which means they are easy to wipe down and keep polished.

There are no downsides to purchasing a finished Murphy bed. They come completely ready to assemble and use!
